Big Read kids activities Saturday at Chadick Park

The Big Read True Grit Kids Day will be Saturday in the main pavilion at Chadick Park, sponsored by McAlester Public Library.

Storyteller Camilla Whittaker will tell campfire stories inspired by the book “True Grit” beginning at 2 p.m., followed by milk and cookies snacks.

Stick Horse Races will follow at 2:35 p.m.

The library will provide stick horses made from pool noodles that children may take home following the races. Winners will receive ribbons.

Another session of campfire stories is set for 3:15, to be followed by costume contests for both adults and children at 3:50.

Four prize packages will be given away to Best Western Costume Categories are male, age 12 to adult; female, age 12 to adult; boys age 11 and under; and girls age 11 and under.

Everyone age 11 and under who participates in the Western Costume Contest will receive a treat package.

Also during the park activities, anyone may enter The Big Read “True Grits” contest by bringing a typewritten copy of his or her best grits recipe.

The winning recipe will be featured at the Keynote Banquet Nov. 16.
