McAlester car show, cruise night draw hundreds

McALESTER — Hundreds attended Saturday’s Downtown McAlester Car Show and Cruise Night, organizers say.

The events were hosted by the First Baptist Church of McAlester, McAlester Main Street and Big Mac Cruzers.

“The car show was a huge success,” said Mike Pruitt of McAlester First Baptist Church.

Terry Beck, of Wagoner, won the “Pastor’s Choice Trophy”  chosen by FBC Pastor Tim Russell, according to Pruitt.

He said Beck’s 1955 powder blue Chevrolet 210 was also was one of the “Top 35” vehicles of the show.

“We had 95 registered vehicles from 18 cities across Oklahoma and one from Kansas,” Pruitt said.

“The place was packed all day long with hundreds of people in attendance.”

He said Washington Avenue from First Street to Second Street was packed with three rows of show vehicles. The upper level of the Bank NA employee parking lot at the southeast corner of Second Street and Washington Avenue was completely full of show cars also.

And he said more cars were on display at the old McAlester High School parking lot, on the northeast corner of the intersection.

Pruitt said more than $720 in free dinners from local restaurants and more than $1,200 in door prizes were awarded to show competitors.

Also on hand was live music, and food vendors hawked their wares as well throughout the event.

Meanwhile, Saturday night’s Cruise Night was also well-attended, according to McAlester Main Street’s Ginny Webb.

“The sidewalks were packed with spectators,” Webb said.

She said some 180 cars cruised McAlester’s downtown for the event, and McAlester’s Tandy Thomas won a drawing that brought in more than $900 for the McAlester Main Street organization.

The cruise night began with the cars lined up at the at Okla Theater on East Choctaw Avenue.

The route looped down First Street to Choctaw Avenue east to Fifth Street and looped back west through the alley.

“It was a great night,” Webb said.
