Chickasaw Writer’s Work Next ‘Let's Talk’ Subject

McALESTER — “Mean Spirit,” a novel by Chickasaw Nation writer-in-residence Linda Hogan, will be the focus of the second session of “Native American Writers of the Plains,” a reading and discussion series now under way at McAlester Public Library.

Dr. Rex Morrell, of Tishomingo, will give a scholarly presentation about the book at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Whiteacre Room, to be followed by refreshments, moderated discussion and door prizes. The public is welcome to attend.

The series, part of the Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma program of the Oklahoma Humanities Council, is sponsored locally by Friends of the Library of McAlester. Books, services and other materials for this series are provided by LTAIO, a project of the Oklahoma Humanities Council, with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Funding for this series was provided by grants from the Inasmuch Foundation and Kirkpatrick Family Fund.

Morrell was a co-developer of a LTAIO series about Latin American fiction, and has given a number of LTAIO presentations. He has served on the Tishomingo City Council and in several capacities with the Oklahoma Humanities Council, as well as with the Chickasaw Library System.

“I enjoy being a participant in these programs in my own community,” he said. “Like other participants, I love being introduced to new authors and new books I would not have discovered on my own. I also look forward to the new series that LTAIO develops each year.”
