Good weather predicted for Saturday's Shared Blessing's 5K

McALESTER — Organizers say great weather is expected for the fourth Annual Shared Blessings 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run set for Saturday.

“The weather looks beautiful,” said Scott Walker Shared Blessing’s executive director.

Runners, walkers and cheering spectators are encouraged to take part in Saturdays run, Walker said.

The event raises money for Shared Blessing’s different ministries, including a clothing store, food pantry, nutrition club, emergency financial help, school supplies, care ministry, Unified Motion, and mobile clothing giveaway.

“Everything is looking great and we are expecting a big turnout this year,”

Walker said.

He said it’s still not too late to join in, runners can sign up the morning of the race, and there are still T-shirts available.

He said this year a pre-race check is set for Friday night from 5 to 7 at the Shared Blessings office, 1556 S. Main St., McAlester.

“We will have the race bibs available and we encourage people to come in and see our facility when they pre-register.”

And this year breakfast burritos will served to the runners after the run.

“First National Bank is doing that for us,” Walker said.

Jolie Moscato of  Moscato Chiropractic is the organizer of the annual fundraiser.

She said she started the benefit because Shared Blessings helps so many in the community.

“They do so much for people,” Moscato said. “They aren’t just a charity. They are a ministry.”

Walker volunteers are needed to stand on the side lines and cheer on the runners.

“I have lots of signs for people to hold up along the route to encourage the runners and I need helpers to point the runners in the right direction along the route,” he said.

“It just it makes it so much better when the runners are cheered as they make their way along the route.”

“We want the participants to know that they are really making a difference.”

Saturday morning registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the corner of First Street and Choctaw Avenue.

Walker said every year more people participate and he’s hoping this year’s turn out will be even better than last when some 150 people showed up to run in the pouring rain.

But even with the rain, Walker said the participants raised more than $8,000 for Shared Blessings.

Medals will be given for different categories this year, including Best Overall Female and Best Overall Male.

The cost to enter is $30 for adults and $15 for those age 12 and younger.
