3 hurt in morning wreck

2 hospitalized after Thursday accident

McALESTER — Three people were hospitalized Friday morning after a wreck on U.S. Highway 69, and two McAlester women were hurt in a wreck in northern Pittsburg County on Thursday afternoon.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports Brandy Conner, 34, of Krebs; Mary Parker, 45, of Bristow, and Aureliano Avendano, 22, of McAlester, were hurt in Friday’s wreck one mile north of Savanna. Injured in Thursday’s accident on State Highway 9 near Longtown were Patricia Scott, 63, and Mikayla Tomasi, 18, both of McAlester.

Thursday’s wreck happened at 5:36 p.m. at Hamilton Road after Scott made a left turn on State Highway 9 in front of Tomasi’s oncoming car, a 2007 Lexus, OHP reported. Scott, who had been driving a 2002 Oldsmobile, suffered internal trunk injuries and was flown by medical aircraft to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa. Tomasi was treated and released from McAlester Regional Health Center, according to OHP.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision, OHP reported. The wreck was investigated by trooper Garrett Gray.

Friday’s accident involved three vehicles — two pickup trucks and a car — at 7:58 a.m., OHP reported. Conner, a 1991 GMC Sonoma, and Parker, in a 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse, were southbound on U.S. Highway 69 when Parker stopped to make a left turn. Her car was hit by Conner’s truck, pushing the Eclipse into the oncoming lane where it was hit by Avendano’s southbound truck, OHP reported.

Conner was taken to MRHC in stable condition with head, internal trunk and leg injuries, according to OHP. She was being transferred to a Tulsa hospital early Friday afternoon, according to Executive Assistant Sonya Stone.

Parker was in critical condition with internal and leg injuries and was flown to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa by medical aircraft, OHP reported.

Avendano was in surgery at the McAlester hospital, Stone reported. OHP had reported he was hospitalized in stable condition with arm and leg injuries.

The cause of Friday’s collision was attributed to a distraction inside the vehicle, according to OHP.

Trooper Gray also investigated Friday’s wreck and said all drivers were wearing seat belts at the time.

  • 07 30 SOUTH AVE 1.jpg 'Road Closed' means just that

    No road.
    No kidding.
For months, signs placed along South Avenue and Country Club Road read “Road Closed Ahead” — although the roads were still open.

Now though, the “Road Closed Ahead” signs on South Avenue, along with those on Country Club Road and Peaceable Road, mean exactly what they say.
