County firefighters have a busy week

McALESTER — Pittsburg County firefighters have been busy this week, battling more than two dozen grassfires that claimed two homes.

Kevin Enloe, director of the Pittsburg County and McAlester Office of Emergency Management, said a home on Pyle Mountain Road was burned Friday night. A mobile home on White Chimney Road near Stuart was burned earlier in the week in what had started as a controlled burn, he said.

There have been no injuries from the fires or firefighting efforts, Enloe said.

According to the emergency director, wind conditions throughout the week drove most blazes; some began as controlled burns, he said, and some were set.

“We’ve got lots of people that just like to set fires,” he said.

The week began with what became known as the Wildcat Fire on Monday that eventually claimed about 700 acres of private land near the county line and Stuart. Enloe said that fire was re-ignited on Tuesday.

But flames have claimed land throughout the county, he said, from a ranch south of Blanco, to Bugtussle, to Crowder, Canadian, Elm Point and Krebs. He said firefighters from throughout the county, including McAlester, can be credited with containing the fires.
