Pittsburg County Child Advocacy Center

February report

McALESTER — In an effort to promote continued awareness of child abuse, I report on activities of the Pittsburg County Child Advocacy Center every two months.

In December and January the center provided services (directly and indirectly) to 18 alleged victims of child abuse and their non-offending family members. The center provided access to equipment and services for 13 on-site forensic interviews of alleged victims, one on-site medical exam and made 18 counseling referrals. All alleged victims are referred to therapeutic counseling.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. During this month, the Advocacy Center’s annual Ryan’s Run fundraiser will be held April 6. The run is named in memory of Ryan Luke, who died at the age of 2 in 1995 from injuries sustained from child abuse.

Proceeds from the run help fund the advocacy center’s services to child abuse victims, help fund training for the professionals who investigate child abuse and help with general operations of the center. It is a 5k run or walk, and also includes a one mile fun run.

There are standard five-year age brackets with awards given to the first three finishers in each bracket. Medals are awarded to all 5k finisher runners /walkers.

The entry fee is $15 until April 2 and then $25 after April 2 and on race day. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 100 registrants. Donor names or company logos are printed on the t-shirts and listed in the advertisements. Donations can be made, and entry forms can be obtained, by call PC-CARE at 918-420-2273.

If you suspect or are aware of child abuse, you can report it anonymously by calling by calling the Hotline at 800-522-3511.

Cecilia Miers is the executive director of the Pittsburg County Child

Advocacy Center. For more information or requests for presentations, call 918-420-CARE (2273) or email Tax deductible donations can be made to PC-CARE, Inc. and mail to 501 E. Delaware McAlester, OK 74501.
