Locals win blind doubles bowling night

McALESTER — When they arrived at Great Balls of Fire on Wednesday, the 18 bowlers had no idea with whom they’d be paired. They paid their entrance fees, then prepared for the alley’s second blind doubles bowling night of the summer season.

Tony Alessi wound up with Ken Bennett, and it turned out to be a match made in heaven. The two combined for a scratch score of 1,122 across three games, taking first place and the $120 prize.

“Any form of competition is good,” Alessi said. “It helps you improve your game, and not knowing who your partner is, it makes it more fair for everybody. We’ve got some guys that are a little more experienced and a little less experienced, so when we get a chance to draw out with somebody, you never know who you’re going to get. That way you can’t stack a team up.”

The duo seemed to play their best in the second game of the night. Alessi bowled a 226, and Bennett rebounded from a 117 in his first game to bowl a 215.

“I didn’t bowl all of last year, this is my second time in 2013, so it took me a little bit to get back in the groove,” Bennett said. “I was keeping it low, and I had to raise it up just because the line was so tight.”
