It's time to name that dog park!

McALESTER — The City of McAlester Department of Parks and Recreation, PAWS and Pride In McAlester have joined forces to build a dog park in McAlester and are holding a public contest to name the park.

Executive director of PIM Stephanie Giacomo said with the winning submission will receive $50.

Starting Friday (May 10), submissions can be emailed to project@prideinmcalester.com, or can be submitted in person to the PIM office at 1 E. Choctaw Ave. Suite 525. The contest ends June 1.

Giacomo said all submissions will be time stamped. In the case of a duplicate submission, the submission turned in first will be the one to count.

Dog park committees will review submissions and narrow them down to finalists. The finalists submissions come down to an online voting form to be voted on by the public by visiting PIM’s website.

McAlester Community Services Director Mel Priddy said from $5,000 donated to the dog park project from Komar and another $5,000 matched by PIM, parks and recreation has already spent $500 to purchase four trees to be planted —two maple trees and two elm trees — at the dog park site.

In March, the city of McAlester approved a lease of a 2.64 acre lot for a $1 for the dog park from McAlester Public Schools and is located between B and C Streets, on West Seneca Avenue.

Giacomo said the park will benefit the community by giving dog owners a place to let their dogs exercise and socialize.

Giacomo said those wishing to donate can find donation forms at PIM’s website, or may call Priddy at 918-423-9268.
