The McAlester News-Capital has won 10 Oklahoma Associated Press/Oklahoma News Executive awards.
Journalists with the News-Capital won two first place awards, five second place awards and three third place honors at the awards banquet held in Norman on Saturday night.
Staff writer Rachel Peterson won first place honors in the Personal Columns category, while Page Designer Brandy Brackett won first for Graphics/ Illustrations.
Second place winners were Staff Writer Jeanne LeFlore for Investigative Reporting; Senior Editor James Beaty, for Business Feature; Staff Writer MJ Brickey for Personal Columns, Publisher Amy Johns for Editorials and Photojournalist Kevin Harvison for Feature Photo.
Third place awards went to Harvison for Spot News Photo and Photo Package, while Brickey also won third for Business Feature.
“I’m extremely proud of our team of news professionals,” said News-Capital Editor Kandra Wells.
“We have assembled a very talented and skillful team of artists and writers who do a fabulous job of telling McAlester’s story.”
Petersen won first place in the columns category for her column “No Tears,” about executions at Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.
Brackett won first place in the Graphics/Illustrations category for an Accent Page celebrating the civil rights movement and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
LeFlore won second place in Investigative Reporting for her series on Narconon Arrowhead.
Beaty won a second place award in Business Feature for his article on “The Hit Zone,” a new invention that uses an air flow device to hold baseballs in mid-air for batting practice, with plans to include McAlester’s Hayden Harvison on the products’ packaging.
Johns won second place honors in the Editorial Writing category.
Kevin Harvison won a second place award in the Feature Photo category, for a photo titled “Program.”
Brickey received second place honors for her Personal Column “If She Can, I Can,” a tribute to her mother.
Brickey won also third place honors for her article, “Say Cheese,” about Lovera’s Cheese Co. winning an international award.
Harvison won third place honors in Spot News Photo for his photo “Homecoming Rocks” featuring a photograph from McAlester High School’s homecoming ceremony and another third place award in the Photo Package category.
The News-Capital competed in Division B in the AP/ONE Awards. AP/ONE’s 2013 awards are to honor work done in 2012.
