The county road between Hartshorne and Adamson is remaining open in the midst of a $1 million-plus project to place not one, but two new asphalt layers over the current surface.
That’s because construction workers are concentrating on one lane at a time on the two-lane roadway covered in the project.
“It covers approximately five miles, from the Hartshorne city limits to the Adamson intersection,” said District 1 Pittsburg County Commissioner Gene Rogers. The five miles of two-lane roadway equates to 10 lane miles being covered by a new asphalt overlay through the project.
Plans call for a three and one-half inch asphalt overlay over the entire road, Rogers said. It includes 1.5 inches of base, then an additional two inches of asphalt surface overlay.
“They’re going to do the bottom layer; let it set and then come back,” Rogers said.
JOB Construction, which has facilities in Hartshorne and Poteau won the bid for the project, which came in at $1,040,239.
On Tuesday morning, JOB construction workers at the old Lone Oak school building and kept an eye on the skies to see if the rain would hold off so they could begin the day’s work.
Rogers and District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith, who is the current commission chairman, said the bid for the project had to be made through the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Funding is through the County Improvements for Roads and Bridges Fund.
Smith, who has a project of his own set to begin soon on the South Blanco Road in District 2, said the CIRB projects also go through a Circuit Engineering District. Smith said he’s a member of the board governing the district, which covers “all of southeastern Oklahoma.”
Projects covered through the program have to meet stringent requirements.
“They have to be pre-engineered and they have to be bid by the state, even though it’s our money,” Smith said. He said the state also inspects the projects.
Both Smith and Rogers are pleased they can do some additional projects in their respective districts through the program.
“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” Rogers said of the Hartshorne-to-Adamson project.
“It’s really going to be nice.”
