City-wide garage sale set again for this Saturday

McALESTER — It’s a do-over for the second annual citywide McAlester Garage Sale.

With intermittent rain showers falling during last weekend’s garage sale, the city of McAlester has decided to hold the event again this weekend, on Oct. 12.

“This is the second time around,” noted Pam Kirby, of the city of McAlester.

Yes, city officials are aware that as of Thursday the National Weather Service had forecast a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms this weekend too, but they wanted to go ahead and take another shot at the city-wide event anyway.

One difference is in how long this weekend’s garage sale is projected to last.

“It will be all day this time, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.,” Kirby said. Last weekend’s city-wide garage sale had been set to end at 1 p.m.

The city-wide garage sale set for Saturday means that the approximately 135 individuals who had signed up to display their wares without the required permit last Saturday, can do so again this Saturday, according to Kirby.

During the McAlester City Council’s regular Tuesday night meeting, city councilors agreed to waive the fees again for this Saturday due to the rain that fell during the time of the scheduled event last weekend.

Because of time constraints, Kirby said she will not be able to contact those who participated in last weekend’s city-wide garage sale to confirm if they will also participate this Saturday.

However, Kirby said the city is making a list available with the addresses of those who were signed up to participate last week. That way, individuals can pick up a list, drive by the addresses and find out for themselves who is participating this Saturday.

As for those who are holding the garage sales again this Saturday, Kirby said it might be a good idea for them to put up a sign.

Kirby has set up a table with the lists in the foyer just inside the main entrance at City Hall, in the area that stays unlocked 24 hours a day.

Lists should also be available at Trash to Treasure, the flea market operated at the corner of Third Street and Wyandotte Avenue to benefit Pride in McAlester, Kirby said.
