Special Primary Election set Tuesday in Pittsburg County District 3 commissioner's race; Carlton Landing town incorporation on

Voters in Pittsburg County’s District 3 are set to go to the polls Tuesday to elect their party’s nominees for a new county commissioner.

Also on Tuesday, voters at the Carlton’s Landing development in northern Pittsburg County are set to cast ballots to determine if they want to incorporate as a town.

All regular polling places in the affected precincts are set to be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday for the two special elections.

Also early in-person absentee ballot voting started Friday at the Pittsburg County Election Board office. Forty-seven early in-person votes had been cast by 5:50 p.m. Friday.

Early in-person absentee ballot voting is set to continue from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday in advance of Tuesday’s election.

The District 3 election is to find a successor to the District 3 county commissioner’s post previously held by Ronnie Young, who died in August. His death remains under investigation.

Democratic candidates on the District 3 Pittsburg County Commission ballot are Jerry Donathan, Larry Partain, Paul Watkins, Trent Myers, Ross Selman, Kenneth Hall and Donald Mathis.

Republican candidates are Miles Cathey and Greg McNall.

Since the county commissioner’s election Tuesday is a primary to select each party’s nominees, only registered Democrats and Republicans who live in District 3 are qualified to cast ballots for candidates in their respective political parties. Because there are no Independent candidates, Independent voters are not eligible to cast ballots in Tuesday’s primary election in the commissioner’s race.

However, members of other political parties in District 3 can cast ballots in the Nov. 12 General Election to determine the new District 3 Pittsburg County commissioner. They can also cross party lines in November.

In contrast to the commissioner’s election, the Carlton Landing election Tuesday is non-partisan, so there are no party restrictions on voters qualified to cast ballots in that race.

Election results will be tallied Tuesday night following the election. Results will become final at  5 p.m. Friday — unless the election results are officially challenged.

Whoever becomes the Democratic and Republican nominees in the District 3 county commissioner’s race Tuesday will then move forward to face each other in the November election.
