Pride in McAlester slates Fall Cleanup

McALESTER — October is Make McAlester Beautiful Month and its also when Pride In McAlester will hold it’s Fall Cleanup.

On Tuesday, McAlester Mayor Steve Harrison signed a proclamation naming October as Make McAlester Beautiful Month. The proclamation was presented by members of Pride In McAlester who are organizing the Fall Cleanup for two weekends in October: Oct.12 and 13, and Oct. 19 and 20.

Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday hours are noon to 3 p.m.

PIM Executive Director Stephanie Giacomo said the event is a PIM partnership with Neighbors Building Neighborhoods, the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department, Allied Waste Services of Alderson, and the City of McAlester.

Cleaning up trash is good for many reasons, according to Giacomo.

“Research shows that clean, litter-free environments encourage less litter, while dirty areas only worsen,” she said.

“Trash also creates health issues, such as tires in urban areas creating an environment for mosquito breeding and flushed medicine contaminating water supplies.”

During the cleanup bulk trash, metal, tires and electronics will be accepted at the former National Guard Armory on the corner of Third Street and Taylor Avenue.

Brush and yard debris will be accepted at the McAlester landfill.

Giacomo said bulk trash includes anything that cannot normally be placed in curbside trash for pickup.

And she said electronics recycling will also be available.

Some of the electronic items that can be recycled include old computers, televisions, printers, copiers, CDs, fitness

equipment, cell phones, refrigerators and anything that runs on electricity, Giacomo said.

On Oct. 19 only, a prescription disposal will also be available at the National Guard Armory, with help from Neighbors Building Neighborhoods, Giacomo said.

“Bring these unwanted items to the former National Guard Armory and help keep McAlester clean and litter-free,” she said.
