LEPC prepares for McAlester Firefighters Classic

McALESTER — From Sept. 27 to 29, McAlester will host the third annual McAlester Firefighter Classic and Local Emergency Planning Committee — along with all 29 Pittsburg County fire departments — are preparing.

The Office of McAlester/Pittsburg County Emergency Management Assistant Director Lois Lupardus asked McAlester Fire Cheif and LEPC Chairman Brett Brewer what is needed for the LEPC's contribution to the McAlester Firefighter Classic and he said they would contribute bottled water, during the LEPC meeting Wednesday.

Local Red Cross Director Lynn Edwards said he has 40 to 50 cases of water to donate.

Edwards also said he has no Gatorade to donate, but he feels that firefighters participating will need Gatorade to replenish electrolytes in some of the courses such as the flash-over where temperatures are intense and will cause firefighters to sweat.

Brewer said the LEPC will look into purchasing the Gatorade.

The McAlester Firefighter Classic educates firefighters from all over the region in cooperation with Kiamichi Technology Center and Oklahoma State University, Brewer said.

Kiamichi Technology Center secures the funding by applying for the Fire  Fighter Initiative Grant. Last year, the grant was for $25,000 the grant from last year was just enough to cover the training. The training that is offered is free to firefighters.

LEPC meetings are at 2 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month, at the Southeast Expo Center — meetings are open to the public. For information, call 918-423-5655.
