There’s a new warden in town

Okla. Board of Corrections appoints new warden at OSP

McALESTER — The Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester has a new warden. On Feb. 28, the Oklahoma Board of Corrections appointed Anita Trammell as the warden of OSP.

“Warden Trammell made state history for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (by) becoming the first female Warden at OSP,” said Terry Crenshaw, warden’s assistant. “Warden Trammell is the 29th warden to serve at OSP (and she) is also the first female warden over an all male maximum-security institution to serve the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.”

Previously to Trammell serving as OSP warden, Randy Workman held the position at the prison. Workman began working as warden at OSP on Dec. 15, 2008. Workman went out on sick leave in August and until her recent appointment as warden, Trammell had been serving as interim warden while Workman was out, according to DOC Public Information Officer Jerry Massie.

In the meantime, Working is retiring from corrections, Massie said.

Before being appointed as warden at OSP, Trammell began serving as warden in April 2010 at the Mack Allford Correctional Center in Stringtown. She also worked at MACC in various other positions.

From June 2006 to March 2010 Trammell served as deputy warden, from October 2005 to May 2006 she served as interim deputy warden, from June 1997 to September 2005 she served as unit manager, from May 1989 to May 1997 she served as case manager supervisor, from September 1986 to April 1989 she served as warden’s assistant and from May 1982 to August 1986 she served as case manager.

In 1982, Trammell received a Bachelor’s degree in sociology from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She has been recognized for her work many times. In 1986 she was named MACC Employee of the Year. That year she was also named DOC Division II Employee of the Year. In 1992, and then again in 2005, she was named MACC Supervisor of the Year. She is a member of the American Correctional Association and the Southern States Correctional Association.

Warden Trammell has worked for many wardens over the past 30 years, she said, and has developed her leadership style from the experiences and mentorship she has received.

Trammell believes that it is important for an individual in to lead by example, walk and talk to staff as well as offenders, and always follow policy and procedure, she said. Warden Trammell is dedicated to the mission statement of the Department of Corrections and is proud to be the Warden at Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
