McALESTER — The candidate filing period starts this week for school board seats in 14 public school districts in Pittsburg County.

Candidates can file for school board seats up for election from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the Pittsburg County Election Board Office at 109 E. Carl Albert Parkway, Room 101.

While all 14 public schools in Pittsburg County have offices open for filing, several have more than one seat up for election. Boards of education in the McAlester, Indianola and Pittsburg school districts have two offices each open for filing.

An election for the open offices is set for Feb. 11. If no candidate in a particular race receives more than 50 percent of the total ballots cast, then an April 1 election will be held with the two candidates who received the most votes in February, according to Pittsburg County Election Board Secretary Cathy Thornton.

Public school districts with offices open for declarations  of candidacy during the three-day filing period, followed by the term of office, include:

• McAlester — Office No. 4 for a five-year term and Office No. 5 for an unexpired term.
