Top of the class

McAlester High School names top honors

McALESTER — Seven McAlester High School seniors have been named valedictorian of the 2013 senior class, and one has been selected as class salutatorian.

Jonathan Barickman, Nicholas James Clark, Tabitha Kristine Conner, Shannon Brett McAlester, Kelsey June Roberson and Anna Marie Rowell have been honored as valedictorians during graduation ceremonies May 16 at 8 p.m. at the Southeast Expo Center. Zach Dugan was recognized as salutatorian.

Barickman, son of Philip and Michelle Barickman, has taken 12 honors and Advanced Placement courses throughout high school and maintains a 4.41 grade point average. He is an Oklahoma State Regents Academic Scholar, a National Merit Commended Scholar and a Rotary Club Good Citizen. He is also a member of McAlester’s Promise and the National Honor Society.

Jonathan has played outfield on the varsity baseball team for four years and is a district and regional champion who was chosen as an All-District Honorable Mention in 2012. He is also a member of the First Baptist Church of McAlester Youth Group.

He will attend the University of Oklahoma in the fall to major in economics at the Price School of Business. He has also been chosen to be part of the President’s Community Scholars, a student organization dedicated to community service.

Clark, the son of David and Cindy Clark, has excelled in honors and AP classes. During his high school career, he has been inducted into National Honors Society and has earned numerous outstanding student awards. He is also a member of McAlester’s Promise and St. John’s Catholic Church Youth Group.

Outside the classroom, Nicholas is a pitcher on the MHS baseball team and received has Varsity Baseball Letter Awards for three years.

He will begin his college life at Oklahoma State University where he will major in civil engineering.

Conner, the daughter of Clay and Jill Conner, of McAlester, has taken 12 honors and AP courses in high school and currently holds a grade point average of 4.41. She has received three Student of the Year awards, four Outstanding Student awards, was named McAlester Rotary Club Student of the Month, was an OSU Alumni Association Honor Scholar and Oklahoma State Regent Scholar.

She has been involved in MacPac freshman orientation, National Honor Society, McAlester’s Promise, yearbook, FCCLA, Diamond Dolls and Students in Faith. She has also participated in youth choir, youth drama, and Judgment House at First Baptist Church of McAlester, and she was a counselor at Wise Road Sports Camp.

Tabitha plans to attend OSU in the fall to attain a bachelor’s degree in psychology and then graduate school at OU to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy.

McAlester is the daughter of Brent and Shawnda McAlester. She has taken five honors classes, seven AP classes, and two college classes. She has also been a baseball manager for three years and has been awarded several outstanding achievements. She has also been awarded the Joe Ray and Dorothy Land Scholarship and Oklahoma Baptist University’s Founder’s Academic Scholarship. She is actively involved in First Baptist Church and is a member of National Honor Society, McAlester’s Promise and Mac Pac.

Shannon’s plans are to attend OBU to major in biology and pre-medicine.

Roberson, the daughter of Michael and Shanna Roberson, has played volleyball for McAlester for six years. She is also a Diamond Doll, an active member of Prom Committee, and has participated as a leader for the MacPac freshman orientation program. She was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior and has received numerous other awards throughout high school such as the State Regent’s Scholarship, the OSU Honors Scholar Award, McAlester Rotary Club Student of the Month, two Student of the Year Awards, and six Outstanding Student Awards. She is one of only 100 Academic All-State recipients across Oklahoma for the 2012-2013 school year.

Kelsey’s future plans include attending OU to major in entrepreneurship, and opening her own daycare upon completion of her bachelor’s degree.

Rowell is the daughter of local artist Skip Rowell and family business owner Cleora Rowell. She has received numerous Outstanding Student Awards, the Honor’s College Award from OU and OSU, High Achievement Awards in both piano and vocal state auditions, and first place honors in the Armed Forces Day Cake Decorating Contest. She was recognized as All-Around Dancer by Pam’s Academy of Dance and has been accepted into the Honor’s College and President Leadership Class at OU. She was awarded an Institutional Nominee Scholarship and is a national finalist for the Elk’s Lodge Most Valuable Student award. She is president of MHS Student Council and participates in McAlester’s Promise, National Honor Society, Service Learning, Pam’s Academy of Dance, Kathy Brod School of Music and the National Society of High School Scholars.

 Anna plans to attend OU and major in bio-medical engineering to work on the mutations of cells and curing genetically linked diseases.  

Dugan, son of Jeffery and Toni Dugan, plans to attend Northeastern State University in the fall to major in cellular biology with optometry school in the future. He has been honored with awards such as the Lions Club Student of the Month, Rotary Student of the Month, Superintendent’s Honor Roll, and an NSU RISE scholar. In addition, he has also been a National Honors Society member, MacPac leader, McAlester's Promise student, Pride In McAlester member and four-year varsity tennis player.
