Free legal advice hosted by Pittsburg County Bar Association

McALESTER — Anyone who has a legal question but who hasn’t got around to consulting a lawyer could be the recipient of some free advice this week.

It’s part of the Ask a Lawyer Day, hosted by the Pittsburg County Bar Association.

A number of attorneys in Pittsburg County have volunteered to man the phones during the Ask a Lawyer program, set from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

The number to phone is 918-423-7211, said Jana Miskovsky, assistant to Pittsburg County Bar Association President Eric Grantham.

The Pittsburg County Bar Association holds the free Ask a Lawyer program each year as a service to the public, Grantham said.

“We invite all members of the public to call and ask any legal question,” he said. “A member of the bar will answer the question or direct them to someone who can.”

Grantham said McAlester attorney Pay Layden has allowed the use of his office for the Law Day program.

Pittsburg County’s Law Day activities are part of a statewide effort in Oklahoma under the auspices of the Oklahoma Bar Association.

“Theme of this year’s law day activities is  “Realizing the Dream; Equality for All.” The Oklahoma Bar Association chose the theme because 2013 marks the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. Law Day will be recognized statewide on Thursday.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the March of Washington, when the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his well-known “I have a dream” speech.

Recognized nationally, Law Day started in Oklahoma in the 1950s. It’s a day set aside each year “to celebrate the freedoms, rights, responsibilities, we enjoy because of our unique legal system,” according to the Oklahoma Bar Association.

In addition to the Pittsburg County project on Wednesday, the statewide Ask a Lawyer television show is set for telecast at 7 p.m. on Thursday over the Oklahoma Education Television Association, the state’s public television station.

Oklahoma Supreme Court  Chief Justice Tom Colbert, who attended Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton, is set be a guest on the Thursday PBS television program. Colbert is the first African American to serve as chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

The statewide number to phone Thursday is 1-800-456-8525 for free legal advice from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Thursday, according to the Oklahoma Bar Association. Spanish speaking attorneys will also be available, organizers of the event said.
