Police called for stuck cars; no injuries reported

McALESTER — Officials say more than seven inches of snow has covered Pittsburg County since Thursday.

Even with the snowfall, all roads in Pittsburg County were still open as of Friday evening and there weren’t any serious accidents, according to Pittsburg County Sheriff Joel Kerns.

“We have had a few motorist assists but no major accidents,” the sheriff said. Most of the help provided to motorists by deputies was for drivers unable to climb hills on the icy roads, he added.

McAlester Police Det. Sgt. Chris Morris said city roads were also all open, and although there have been a few cars pulled out of ditches, no serious accidents were reported.

“The roads get very icy at night,” he warned. “Drivers really need to use caution.”

Pittsburg County commissioners said they were busy along with their crews keeping roads clear and the bridges salted in the county.

District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith said he had no closures in his area.

“I think the snow helped keep the roads safer,” he said. “It’s the ice underneath that’s dangerous.”

District 1 Commissioner Gene Rogers said his roads were all still open and contributed that to the hard work of his crew and to drivers being more cautious because of the weather.

“We’ve been running our salt rigs on the hills and bridges,” he said of efforts by county crews to de-ice roadways and bridges. “We haven’t had to close any roads.”

Trent Myers, newly-elected District 3 commissioner, said everything has been going pretty good in his neck of the woods.

“We’ve pulled the snow off all our main feeder roads,” Myers said of efforts to keep larger county roads clear.

“Things are going smooth right now and it’s all because of pure hard work.”

The National Weather Service forecast for today includes a slight chance of freezing drizzle before 9 a.m., then a slight chance of sleet between 9 a.m. and noon. Skies are to be mostly cloudy, with a high temperature in the McAlester area near 31 and a south wind of 5 to 10 mph. The chance for precipitation is 20 percent, with any new precipitation amounts predicted to measure less than a tenth of an inch.

Tonight’s forecast by the NWS is for mostly cloudy skies with a low around 18 and south winds 5 to 10 mph becoming north after midnight.

Monday’s forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a high near 31 and north winds around 10 mph.
