A new municipality for Pittsburg County? Commissioners to decide

McALESTER — For the first time in several generations, a new municipality is set to become a reality in Pittsburg County.

The discussion of a new municipality for Carlton Landing happened during Monday’s regular meeting the Pittsburg County commissioners.

The commissioners tabled a request to accept documents from Carlton Landing representatives Grant Humphries and Mike Oneil during the meeting.

Oneil, attorney for the Carlton Landing community, asked the commissioners to accept documents required by state statutes to create a new municipality for the $20 million housing development on Lake Eufaula.

Humphries said this will be the first municipality created in decades in the State of Oklahoma.

District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith said because it’s been decades since a municipality was formed in Pittsburg County he would like to have the district attorneys office read over them.

“We have never done this before,” Smith said. “I just want to make sure we do it right.”

Smith suggested that although a public hearing may not be required, it would be a good idea to have them anyway to inform the public as well answer questions the public might have.

After approval from the commissioners Oneil said the next step is to have a vote by the residents of the community.

“We are planning to have the election on Oct. 8.”

Also attending Monday’s meeting was District 3 Commissioner Chairman Ronnie Young. District 1 Commissioner Gene Rogers was not present at the meeting.

Pittsburg County commissioners meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The meetings are open to the public.
