New gear, ambulance approved for McAlester Fire Department

McALESTER — The McAlester Fire Department is about to become better-equipped.

McAlester city councilors approved two measures to purchase new firefighting equipment and a new ambulance for the MFD.

McAlester Fire Chief Brett Brewer addressed the councilors during their regular Tuesday night meeting in the council chambers at City Hall.

The first item included a request for the council to approve the purchase of firefighter bunker gear, at a cost not to exceed $6,000. Brewer said the gear will be paid for with funds from MFD’s portion of the county quarter-cent sales tax collected for fire services.

“We’ve got some new recruits that we need to purchase some gear for at a cost not to exceed $6,000,” Brewer told the councilors.

“How may recruits are there?” asked Ward 1 Councilor Weldon Smith.

“Three are new. The majority of it’s going to go to two of them,” Brewer said.

Regarding the second item, Brewer requested the replacement of a 2001 Ford E-350 ambulance at an approximate cost to the city of $150,000.

Brewer said the ambulance has more than 100,000 miles on it.

“It recently had engine failure,” Brewer said. Estimated repair costs were $12,298.85. The ambulance is 13 years old and had already been slated for replacement on the city’s Capital Improvement Plan for 2014-2015.

“What will you do with the old ambulance?” asked Ward 2 Councilor John Titsworth.

“It will be surplus,” Brewer said.

Following the brief discussion, city councilors voted unanimously to approve the two MFD-related measures.
