Old Town McAlester sees more improvements.

McALESTER — As part of on-going improvements to McAlester’s Old Town area, eight new streetlight banners were installed on North Main Street this week by the McAlester Main Street Association.

McAlester business owner Eddie Gray said he was approached by Main Street Director Ginny Webb about having a banner front of his businesses, The Whistle Stop Bistro and the JJ McAlester Antique Mall.

“I was very happy that we could benefit from this project,” he said.

The banners read: Old Town Historic District — Established 1869 —Where McAlester began.

The banners also display the new City of McAlester logo

Gray said he was very happy have the banners placed in The Old Town area, also known as North Town.

He said a name change from North Town to Old Town happened about 40 years ago.

“In the ’70s, the city spent a lot of money to change the name to Old Town and we still feel ideas behind the development are relevant,” he said.

Gray said the banners will help promote the big Wild West Festival set for Oct. 5.

Gray is president of the Old Town Association, a group planning this year’s Wild West Festival since last year.

This is Old Town’s second Wild West Festival and Gray said it’s going to be bigger and better.

Gray said his organization and the McAlester Main Street Association are both working hard to promote the area with events such as the Wild West Festival and by adding improvements such as planters, benches and banners.
