Plans are moving forward for this weekend’s Italian Festival — featuring a number of activities, along with food, arts, crafts, entertainment and the return of some popular favorites.
The 43rd Annual Italian Festival is set to run from 9 a.m. until dark Saturday, May 18, and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, according to organizers of the event.
Something special is planned in the food department, according to organizers of the event.
“This year we’ve added homemade pizza, along with sausage sandwiches,” said Italian Festival Committee member Bob Lenardo.
Pizzas were tried out last year at the suggestion of Art Wilkinson and were a big hit, Lenardo said. For this year, the festival organizers have bought a special oven for the pizzas, he said.
The pizzas and sausage sandwiches offered by the Italian Festival Committee are in addition to the traditional spaghetti and meatball dinners available at the main food tent. Plenty of other food vendors will be at the festival as well.
Helicopter rides are scheduled to return for this weekend’s Italian Festival, according to Lenardo and fellow committee member Bob Impson. Those partaking of the ride will get an airborne view of the festival site.
Musical entertainment at the festival includes Rosco & the Heads, Bad Leg Benny, Back Alley Breakdown and Santa Fe Line.
Christian singers from Life Church are set to perform around noon Sunday, Lenardo said.
Carnival rides, pony rides and inflatables will be at the festival again this year, he said.
Also, numerous arts and crafts vendors will be set up inside the Southeast Expo Center as well as outside on the festival grounds.
No admission is charged to attend the festival. The Southeast Expo Center is approximately three miles west of McAlester along U.S. Highway 270.
