Council takes action on long-standing drainage problem on city's south side

McALESTER — McAlester city councilors took steps Tuesday night to help solve a long-standing drainage problem on the south side of the city.

City councilors took the action when they met in regular session Tuesday night in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

The agenda item called for the council to consider and act upon a measure authorizing the mayor to sign a contract between the city and  the K-Bar Company for construction on the Mallard Lane and Flamingo Road Drainage Improvement Project.

Councilors approved the mayor entering into an agreement to accept the company’s $143,663.87 bid for total construction of the project.

It calls for completion of a “concrete-lined channel,” which had never been completed.

“This is a project that has been on the horizon for many years,” said City Engineer and Public Works Director John Modzelewski.

He said it had originally been part of a Capital Improvements Project from years ago that had never been finished.

“The previous concrete-linedchannel stopped short,” Modzelewski said.

Now, corrugated pipes that had been used for the drainage have been failing, he said.

Mayor Stave Harrison said he was glad to see progress on the project.

After the meeting, Modzelewski said the new section of the concrete-lined channel will line up with anexisting section after work is completed.

“The channel should have been completed years ago,” he said, adding that he considers the matter a safety issue.
