City ready to pick up, recycle Christmas trees

McALESTER — Bring us your tired, your worn, your needle-shedding Christmas trees.

That’s the offer the city of McAlester is making to city residents who have decided it’s time to take down their Christmas tress for this holiday season.

“The city of McAlester Parks Department will begin picking up live Christmas trees on Wednesday,” Jan. 22, said McAlester Community Affairs Director Mel Priddy.

Priddy noted that it’s the city that’s picking up the trees, not the company that does the regular garbage collections for the city.

That means those who are placing their Christmas trees outside for pick-up will need to notify the city to let workers know they’re ready. The number to call to make arrangements for the pickup is 918-423-9268.

A few requirements are in place for McAlester residents wanting city personnel to pick up their trees.

“Tree must be placed on the curbs, beside the house,” Priddy said. “There will be no alley pick-ups.”

The city has a recycling plan in mind for the trees.

“We’ll take the trees to the city landfill to grind them up for mulch,” Priddy said.

Other trees will have an ecological influence in another way.

“A few will be taken to Lake McAlester for fish habitat,” said Priddy.
