The Southeastern Oklahoma Chapter of the American Red Cross has a new director and his name will be familiar to many McAlester residents — Lynn Edwards.
After serving as the executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of McAlester, Edwards has now filled the top spot for the Red Cross’ Southeast Chapter.
He’s well aware of the legacy of his predecessors in the post: John Lester and Billie Cathey.
“John Lester and Billie Cathey are icons in the Red Cross in Pittsburg County and Southeastern Oklahoma, “ he said. “They’ve given a lifetime of helping other people.”
In his new post, Edwards will serve as the executive director of the Red Cross program in the 12 counties covered in the Southeastern District.
He’s already impressed with what he’s seen of the Red Cross.
“This organization amazes me with its volunteers,” Edwards said, inside his office on the first floor of the McAlester Building Foundation, a building which also houses the McAlester Public Schools Administrative offices.
He’s already familiar with how people in the area help others.
“People in Southeastern Oklahoma will take care of people in Southeastern Oklahoma,” he said.
One of his goals as the new executive director of the area Red Cross Chapter is to help raise funds.
“We will go throughout the process of raising money for the Red Cross that will go to the victims of disasters,” he said.
He’s also aware he will face challenges in the new position.
“The biggest challenge, as a new person on the job, would be to have a major disaster before I’m up to speed. Should that happen, I’ll have a mentor through the American Red Cross,” he said.
“They’re very precise and very structured. By being that way, they’re very successful with what they do.”
Edwards had served for six years as executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of McAlester.
