McALESTER — A Pauls Valley man is dead and a McAlester woman was hospitalized after their vehicles collided head-on Sunday on a wet U.S. Highway 270.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported John Blakeway, 59, of Pauls Valley, died in the 5:11 p.m. wreck just west of Buffalo Road on U.S. Highway 270. Injured was Janice Bailey, 47, of McAlester.

Bailey was contacted at McAlester Regional Health Center on Monday and said she suffered four broken ribs in the wreck. She expected to be discharged from the hospital Tuesday.

According to OHP, Blakeway was driving westbound on the highway in rainy weather when his vehicle crossed the center line and hit Bailey’s SUV. Bailey told the News-Capital she had been driving in the opposite direction when the accident happened.

Blakeway had not been wearing his seat belt at the time of the wreck and was pinned in his vehicle for about an hour, according to OHP.

Bailey, who had been wearing a seat belt, was taken to the McAlester hospital with head and internal trunk injuries, OHP reported.

The accident was investigated by trooper Daniel Hackler of the Pittsburg County detachment of OHP’s Troop D, assisted by troopers Kyle Ward and Brad Wilson. Haywood Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
