McAlester Planning Commission met Tuesday night during a regular meeting in council chambers at McAlester City Hall.
During the meeting the commission denied a request for a rezoning of a residential area after listening to a plea from McAlester resident Loise Washington.
Washington went before the group to ask them to consider rezoning a residential property on 804 E. Monroe Ave. for a beauty salon.
She said the property is owned by Janelle Henderson Brooks owner of Janell’s House of Beauty on North Main Street.
“There will be no neon lights and it will not impede or increase daytime traffic ...” Washington said.
Chairman Mark Emmons said the commission denied the request because of the city codes which require commercial property to be a minimum of 50,000 square feet and this property was 7,500 square feet.
Also during the meeting a decision to rezone another residential property was tabled until the next meeting.
Present at Tuesday’s meeting was Chairman Mark Emmons and members Ross Eaton, Justin Few, Susan Kanard, Harvey Bollinger and Karen Stoubaugh, Denise Lewis, Primus Moore and Justin Few.
