Power went out

City-wide: Outages experienced due to failed equipment

McALESTER — Several people were rescued from a courthouse elevator and a school program was shut down after a power outage hit McAlester on Wednesday afternoon, officials say.

More than 1,000 McAlester residents were without power for some 15 minutes on Wednesday when an equipment failure caused the outage, according to Frank Phillips of American Electric Power/Public Service Company of

Oklahoma.

The outage began at 1:57 p.m. Wednesday, ended at 2:15 p.m. and affected 1,251 customers, he said.

McAlester Fire Capt. Doug Basinger said 11 people were stuck in a Pittsburg County Courthouse elevator for about 30 minutes because of the outage.

“We rescued nine inmates and two deputies from the elevator,” Basinger said.

There were no injuries, he said.

The power outage also caused an afterschool program at Washington Early Childhood Center to be canceled Wednesday, according to Debbie Watkins of McAlester Public Schools.

“The Beyond the Bell program did cancel for the day after they were told the outage could last several hours,” Watkins said.
