OTC names Yvette Martin as tag agent for McAlester

McALESTER — A new McAlester tag agent has been appointed by the Oklahoma Tax Commission and the local tag agency could be open again in less than a month, officials say.

Yvette Martin, who has served as executive director of the Southeastern United Way for more than 19 years, was appointed as the McAlester tag agent during a regular meeting for the Oklahoma Tax Commission on Tuesday afternoon.

The McAlester tag agency has been closed since the December death of long-time McAlester tag agent Ron McCoy. Since then McAlester residents have had to travel Stuart or Hartshorne for tag agency services.

Martin was chosen from a large pool of applicants for the position, according to Russ Nordstrom, director of the Motor Vehicle Division at OTC.

He said there were more than 50 inquiries for the position; 35 applications were sent out and 17 were returned.

Martin she is humbled by the appointment.

“I feel humbled and appreciative that the Oklahoma Tax Commission has instilled their trust and fiduciary responsibility in me as I serve as the new McAlester tag agent,” Martin said.

“It’s truly an honor to serve my state and my city in this capacity.”

She said she’s still the executive director of the Southeastern United Way but she plans to step down for her new appointment.

“I will be resigning after 19 years of serving my community to take on my new responsibilities as the McAlester tag agent,” Martin said.

Nordstrom said he recommended Martin along with three others for the appointment. He declined to name the other three applicants he recommended.

Nordstrom and his supervisor, Tony Mastin, executive director of the OTC, selected Martin for recommendation to the full commission.

“I think she has a lot of energy and will she be a great representative for the Oklahoma Tax Commission,” he said of Martin.

He said the tag agent is paid according to fees, which can be percentage based or flat rate, according to Oklahoma law.

The agent is a independent contractor and receives no insurance or other benefits with the position, according to Nordstrom.

Martin said she plans to open the agency again as soon as possible.

“I’m hoping to have it up and running in about two to three weeks,” she said.

Martin said although she hasn’t yet finalized the details, she hopes to open the agency in the same location.
