On Saturday, a “Burger Bash” fundraiser benefiting The McAlester Care Center, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, will be held at Country Mart.
“We provide a safe place for woman and their children who are victims of domestic violence,” said Connie Woods, a shelter supervisor..
From 10 am to 6 pm, “$2 will buy a burger, chips and drink and treat,” Woods said.
“We are so grateful that Country Mart is supplying everything,” Woods said.
“Because everything was donated, all the funds we raise will go directly to help the residents of the shelter.”
She said raffle tickets will also be sold during the event and “we have lots of great prizes donated from local businesses.”
Woods said the shelter’s goal is to try to eliminate domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.
Some of the services provided by the shelter include, crisis telephone counseling, employment, temporary shelter, peer and professional counseling, assistance in obtaining community resources, housing and police, hospital, court advocacy, transportation, children’s services, sexual assault response and prevention programs.
“We try to establish as close a home environment as possible, Woods said. “These children and women come into our shelter because of being battered. They usually leave environment any way they can, leaving all personal belongings behind. These clients are stripped of their self-esteem and all their dignity.”
She said many of the women come into the shelter without any means of support and with “no income or finances to provide for the children so the shelter staff tries to provide for the children through donations.”
Country Mart is at 601 E. Wyandotte McAlester.
