McALESTER — The McAlester High School cross country team has had all kinds of problems this season: A small roster, injuries, academic ineligibility — difficult problems to overcome, certainly, but not unusual for a sports team.
Then junior Alicia Edwards’ 14-year-old brother Troy died on September 19, and the whole season changed.
“We kinds took a blow, and our training kind of took a hit after that,” coach Susanne Carney said Tuesday. “The whole team rallied around her, but it was a pretty traumatic time for the whole team.”
A very tightly knit team, the Buffaloes skipped their September 20 meet in Tulsa, but returned to competition Thursday for a meet in Owasso, though only senior captain, junior Parker Tidwell and Edwards actually raced.
