McAlester KTC students compete in state FCCLA contest

McALESTER — Kiamichi Technology Center, McAlester Campus, recently participated in the 2014 Oklahoma State Students Taking Action with Recognition Events for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

Erika Christman, a senior at KTC and Kiowa High School, received a gold medal in Early Childhood Education, one of 25 national STAR events available to FCCLA students. Her first-place medal was presented at an awards ceremony honoring all participants at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City on April 4.

Caitlyn Phillips, a senior at KTC and McAlester High School, received a bronze medal in Early Childhood Education Occupational Division. The third-place medal was presented to her at an awards ceremony honoring all participants at Oklahoma Department of Career and Technical Education in Stillwater on March 27.

Tabbatha Schultz, an adult student at KTC, received a gold medal in Early Childhood Education. Her first-place medal was presented April 4.

The Early Childhood event recognizes participants who demonstrate their ability to use knowledge and skills gained from their Early Care and Teacher Preparation class at KTC.  Each participant developed a portfolio along with resource materials. On site, participants plan and provide an oral presentation describing the activity that they plan while making modifications for special situations and the needs of students.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education and FCCLA are components in the CareerTech system. The FCCLA is national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address personal, family, work and societal issues. There are more than 10,000 students and 400 chapters in Oklahoma high school and technology center campuses that are members of FCCLA.

“Throughout this year, KTC-FCCLA members tackled issues such as teen violence prevention, family issues, career exploration and much more,” said Kellie Cantrell, local FCCLA adviser.

“KTC’s Early Care and Education program along with FCCLA programs enrich student learning, improve self-esteem, and serve students with a range of ability levels, economic situations, and cultural influences.”
