McALESTER — The board of directors for McAlester Fortnightly, a volunteer club within the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, celebrated their 110 years of community service during the February meeting. The organization was recognized by GFWC International President Mary Ellen Laister with a Certificate of Achievement and a personal letter congratulating the club. The signature project of GFWC is domestic abuse awareness and prevention and McAlester Fortnightly primarily donates its volunteer hours and funds to the KIBOIS McAlester Care Shelter for battered women and their children, the Hope House homeless shelter for women and children, the Youth Emergency Shelter for endangered youths, and the Good Samaritan homeless shelter for men.
