McAlester child bruised, broken and burned; man gets prison time

McALESTER — A McAlester man was recently sentenced to serve a lengthy prison-sentence for his abuse of a two-year-old boy.

Kyle Daniel Hoppe, 31, of McAlester, pleaded guilty June 17 in Pittsburg County District Court to felony counts of child abuse by injury and child neglect. He was sentenced to 30 years (with the last 15 years suspended) and fined $1,365.

McAlester police responded March 26 to call from the McAlester Regional Health Center regarding a 2-year-old boy who was bruised, burned and beaten.

The child was being transported by ambulance from the Indian Clinic, MRHC emergency room personnel told police. The 2-year-old had injuries to his face, torso, legs, scrotum and penis, according to a police affidavit.

The young boy had burn marks of a “honey comb” shape on his back and lower left cheek; he had several bruises on his arms and legs; he had additional bruising on his body and face; he had injuries to his testicles and penis — which were swollen and red; he had blood in his eyes; he had additional burns on his body and scalp and he had two ribs that had been broken previously, the affidavit states.

An emergency room nurse told police that the boy’s injuries, his case, “was one of the most severe she had seen,” the affidavit states. “Not in the fact that the injuries were life-threatening but the overall magnitude of the injuries.”

An emergency room doctor also told police “this was one of the more severe cases he had seen of injuries to a child,” the affidavit states. When police observed the boy, he “was very subdued and was not interacting in a manner which ... would (be) expect(ed) from a toddler,” the affidavit states.

Hoppe was charged March 27 in the case and Destiny Hope Kelley, 20, also of McAlester, was charged the same day with one felony count of enabling child abuse by injury and child neglect.

According to court records, the child allegedly sustained some of his injuries two weeks prior to receiving medical attention.

Kelley is due back in court July 10 at 9 a.m. If convicted, she is facing up to life in prison.
