McAlester city councilors have officially adopted the city’s budget for the upcoming 2013-2014 Fiscal Year — which is nearly $3 million less than the amount budgeted in June 2012.
The total approved budget includes expenditures of $36,775,169 for the 2013-2014 Fiscal Year that begins July 1 and extends through June 30, 2014.
“It’s down approximately $2.8 million from last year’s budget,” City Manager Pete Stasiak said following the city council’s special Thursday night meeting.
“Personnel is down by about 20 positions,” Stasiak said. “Materials and supplies are addressed to help the shortfall.”
After the meeting, Stasiak said the new budget called for no additional terminations of city employees, other than the seven city workers who lost their jobs earlier this year.

Adopting the budget was one of only two items on the special meeting agenda. The other item called for the city to accept a $1,600 grant from Centerpoint Energy on behalf of the McAlester Fire Department.
City councilors voted unanimously on both items, with Ward 2 Councilor John Titsworth absent from the meeting.
