Top of the class

Canadian High School names top honors

McALESTER — David Lenox has been honored as valedictorian and Paige Henninger as salutatorian at the 2013 Canadian High School graduation May 10.

Graduation ceremonies were set for 7 p.m. at the Canadian Schools Darrell James Gymnasium.

Lenox is the son of Tracy and Jeanne Lenox, and the grandson of Terry and Donna Lenox, and David and Dang Edmund’s. He is the great-grandson of Sue Lenox.

David is graduating with 4.15 cumulative grade point average and has completed nine hours of concurrent enrollment through Eastern Oklahoma State College. He has also completed high school honor classes and was named to the Oklahoma Honor Society for four years, the National Honor Society for three years, and has been on the Superintendent’s Honor Roll for four years.

He was the first student at Canadian Public Schools to score advanced on all EOI tests. Other achievements include playing four years of basketball, baseball, Academic Quiz Bowl and Teens for Christ, three years of football and one year as a Student Council representative.

He graduated from Cadet-Lawman Highway Patrol Camp in the summer of 2012, and will return this summer as junior staff member.

David is a long-time active member of Canadian Shores Free Will Baptist Church and is a member of Sam’s Point Volunteer Fire Department.

He plans to graduate from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in fire engineering.

Henninger is the daughter of Chad and Dana Henninger. Her grandparents are Melanie Roberts, Chris and Gladys Henninger, and Howard and Betty Ragan.

Paige will graduate with 4.13 grade point average and is a lifelong member of the Choate Prairie Baptist Church.

She has studied dance at Angie’s Dance for 12 years and is a part of a competitive dance team. She has achieved overall high scores and judge’s choice awards, including an overall for tap at StarPower in Dallas last year. She placed second at McAlester’s Got Talent contest and competed in the USA World Showcase 2007 in Las Vegas.

Other honors include recognition from the Oklahoma National Honor Society and Superintendent’s Honor Roll, and placement within the top 30 percent of her junior class by the Pittsburg County OSU Alumni Association as an Outstanding High School Student. She is a Teens for Christ member and the Student Council president. She has been recognized as Choctaw Nation Star Student and was chosen as student of the month by faculty.

In 2012, she was medalist for Academic Scholastic Contests at EOSC and Connors State College.

Future plans include earning an associate’s degree at EOSC, then enrolling at Northeastern State University to pursue a degree in visual and performing arts.

  • Look what's going on downtown McAlester tonight

    Tonight, area residents are invited to join other community members in front of the old Hunts building at the northwest corner of Choctaw Avenue and Second Street in downtown McAlester to listen and to play music in an open street jam, karaoke, cruise-in and to enjoy one of McAlester's two downtown districts. Set-up starts at 6 p.m., jam will be underway by 7 p.m. and at approximately 8 p.m. karaoke all the while cars cruise in. Everyone should feel free to bring lawn chairs and grills, instruments and music equipment, or classic, modified, modern -- all -- show cars. There are no contests or prizes planned, just community fellowship.
