A ground breaking and name reveal is set for the first dog park in McAlester today at 3:30 p.m., according to Stephanie Giacomo executive director of Pride In McAlester.
The park is between B and C Streets, on West Seneca Avenue.
The community was recently asked to vote online on the PIM website for one of three names chosen as finalists during a May contest to name the park.
On Friday after the ground breaking, Giacomo said the park will be named one of three winning names, Bark Avenue, McAlester Bark Park or Central Bark.
“We had 87 votes,” she said.
The park has been in the works since the City of McAlester Department of Parks and Recreation, PAWS and Pride In McAlester joined together to make the park a reality, according to Giacomo.
In March the city of McAlester approved a lease of a 2.64 acre lot for a $1 for the dog park from McAlester Public Schools at between B and C Streets, on West Seneca Avenue.
Giacomo said half the funds for building park have been donated by they are still seeking donations
“The city doesn’t have the money for this so we are raising money,” Giacomo said.
