County Free Fair fun begins at the Southeast Expo Center

McALESTER — The fun has already started at the Pittsburg County Free Fair at the Southeast Expo Center.

On Thursday carnival rides were set up and ready to go for Friday night at night 6 p.m. when the carnival begins.

And inside the expo building, hundreds of students for the land judging contest.

Keith Kincaid superintendent of Crowder Schools said he brought several of his students to participate in the contest.

He said the students were tested on the knowledge of soil on paper and then taken outside for a hands-on test.

Exhibits could also be found inside the expo building. Everything from award winning apple pies, quilts and plants and even taco shaped cakes could be found on display.

This year the show has more than 2,500 different exhibits for visitors to enjoy.

The Pittsburg County Free Fair started Tuesday and ends Saturday.

Some of the  4-H and FFA exhibits include livestock, art, photography and others as well as exhibits from the public in the Open Class Division, which includes cake decorating, pie making, quilting, knitting, crochet, leisure and cultural arts divisions.

Students entered into the fair will compete for ribbons in the livestock show for their rabbits, goats, swine, sheep, pigeons, cattle and chickens.

  The winning cattle, sheep, and swine will be available for viewing on Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon.

Along with exhibits and winning exhibits on Saturday the Annual Chili-Cook Off will be held in Expo kitchen at 10 a.m.

To enter the cook-off participants will need a copy of the recipe and a crock pot of chili (2-4 pounds) from three categories; Traditional (meat and seasoning only), Specialty, and Fire Alarm,” according to LaDell Emmons an organizer and participant in the fair,

 The entry fee for the chili event is $10 per entry and the divisions are by age: 9-18, and 19 and older. Individuals may enter in more than one category and top winners will receive trophies and a cash prize. On Saturday at noon, the chili will be available for sampling by the general public.

The fair continues today and Saturday.

There is no charge for admission.

The Pittsburg County Fairgrounds and Southeast Expo Center are west of McAlester on U.S. Highway 270.
