Pittsburg County Junior Livestock Show begins at the fairground

McALESTER — The Pittsburg County Junior Livestock Show started Wednesday with cattle, swine and goat entries at the Pittsburg County Fairgrounds.

At the show, members of the Pittsburg County 4-H and FFA youth organizations are given the opportunity to show their livestock with the winning entries to be auctioned at the Premium Sale on Saturday.

“We do this to help our young people become self-reliant, productive, contributing members of the agricultural industry,” said Mike Carter Pittsburg County 4-H extension educator.

The winning livestock will be auctioned at the Premium Sale with all proceeds going to back the winning entrants.

Gary Barlow is the Sheep Commissioner for the show.

“The money that is won goes back to the students, it’s a great project raises livestock teaches them responsibility,” Barlow said.

 He said the students can use the money they win to help pay for raising their livestock and to purchase another animal to raise.

Anna Farrow is a 17-year-old senior at Crowder High School and is in the Crowder FFA.

She said she was excited about participating in this years show.

“It’s an amazing thing to be involved in, simply because of all the life lessons we learn, Anna said.

“We learn to be courteous in life, responsible, honest and humble when we win and proud to lose, because we can only get better.”

Meanwhile participants were unloading show animals for their weigh-in early Wednesday morning.

Daytona Trammel, 17 of Kiowa and his father Micheal brought Daytona’s sheep in to be weighed in on Wednesday.

“We are showing our sheep today,” Daytona said.

The sheep show took place after the 4 p.m. goat show.

Today the show starts at 9 a.m. with the judging of swine.

The day’s events will start with the Gilt Show followed by the Market Swine Show.

After the shows the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Market Swine will be announced along with the Premium Sale selection followed with the Swine Showmanship contest.

Friday events begin at 10 a.m. with the Judging of Cattle starting with the Heifer Show followed by the Steer Show set to start one hour after the conclusion of the Heifer Show.

After the Steer Show is the Supreme and Reserve Champion Steer Selection, the Supreme and Reserve Supreme County Raised Heifer Selection.

Saturday at 9 a.m. is the All Around Showmanship Contest and at 6 p.m. the Awards and Presentations will take place followed by the Premium Sale.

The show is open to the public and concessions are available.

  • Look what's going on downtown McAlester tonight

    Tonight, area residents are invited to join other community members in front of the old Hunts building at the northwest corner of Choctaw Avenue and Second Street in downtown McAlester to listen and to play music in an open street jam, karaoke, cruise-in and to enjoy one of McAlester's two downtown districts. Set-up starts at 6 p.m., jam will be underway by 7 p.m. and at approximately 8 p.m. karaoke all the while cars cruise in. Everyone should feel free to bring lawn chairs and grills, instruments and music equipment, or classic, modified, modern -- all -- show cars. There are no contests or prizes planned, just community fellowship.
