Pittsburg County man gets 10 years prison time for assault

McALESTER — A Pittsburg County man recently received a 10-year prison sentence for assault and other charges.

William Claude Gregory Jr., 39, appeared in Pittsburg County District Court on Oct. 3 and pleaded guilty to the following charges:

• Assault with a dangerous weapon;

• Unlawful possession of a controlled drug (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute;

• Eluding a police officer;

• Running a roadblock;

• Driving without a valid driver’s license, and

• Failure to wear a seatbelt.

Gregory was fined $2,800 and was ordered to serve 10 years in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

According to court records, Gregory assaulted Pittsburg County Deputy Jack Suter by driving his vehicle directly at the deputy on May 17. Gregory led officers on a high-speedchase, “placing motorist’s lives in danger,” court records state. Gregory drove a 1998 Ford pickup truck through a roadblock and attempted to elude police near Piney Creek Road and State Highway 9, according to court records.

Gregory fled in his vehicle and drove on several rural Pittsburg County roads before crashing the truck and fleeing on foot, a police affidavit states.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Tracking Team was called in to assist in locating Gregory. He “was caught a short time later,” the affidavit states.

Gregory’s sentence was pursuant to a plea bargaining agreement with the District 18 District Attorney’s Office.
