Celebration to honor U.S. Marine Corps includes all military

McALESTER — It’s time for another celebration honoring the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps — and both military and non-military members of the public are welcome to attend.

“Attention Marines! The ball is on,” said Jimmy G. Ulibarri, a member of the Indian Nations Detachment of the Marine Corps League and one of those helping organize the event.

The 238th U.S. Marine Corps Ball is set for 6 p.m. on Nov. 9, a Saturday night, at the Lee Maxwell Center at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant.

“Participation from the community has always been good,” said Johnny Nix, also a member of the Marine Corps League and another organizer of the event.

McAPP Commander and U.S. Army Col. Joseph G. Dalessio is featured speaker for this year’s Marine Corps Ball.

Royce Jackson, commandant of the Indian Nations Detachment of the Marine Corps League, said other branches of the U.S. military will also be honored during the event.

“We’re honoring all the armed forces — it isn’t just the Marines — because we need all of the armed forces to do everything we do. The Air Force, the Army, the Navy and Coast Guard, we all work together as one unit,” Jackson said.

A traditional ceremony to honor the U.S. Marine Corps’ 238 years of service, from its founding in 1775 to the present, is part of the event.

It also includes food and live entertainment, featuring disc jockey and entertainer Ronnie Kaye, Nix said.

Tickets for the Marine Corps Ball are $40 a pair, or $25 for a single. Corporate sponsorships are $350 for four reserved seats, which also includes table recognition, program listing and mentions during the program, according to event organizers.

The tickets are available at the Nix Auto Center at 700 George Nigh Expressway and at the Big 4 Barber Shop at 14 E. Choctaw Ave. in downtown McAlester.

Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of McAlester, Nix said.
