October 26 is officially Make a Difference Day for the City of McAlester.
McAlester Mayor Steve Harrison gathered with Maureen Harrison and several MDD volunteers on Thursday and signed a proclamation to make Oct. 26 Make A Difference Day for the city of McAlester.
Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of community service. Millions of volunteers around the world unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others, according to makeadifferenceday.com.
Maureen Harrison said all types of volunteers are needed.
“You don’t have to be a construction worker, we need everyone,” she said.
Volunteers are asked to dress for the occasion and to bring tools, ladders and lawn equipment if possible, Maureen Harrison said.
During Make a Difference Day volunteers assist people with clean-up and minor repairs in homes around McAlester.
This year some of the expected projects include installing and testing smoke alarms, covering windows and doors with plastic, weather-stripping around exterior doors, installing furnace filters, lubricating door hinges and locks, and replacing light bulbs.
There are also mowing, weed-eating and leave raking projects are planned.
“We need people who are willing to work, and people of all ages are encouraged to volunteer,” Maureen Harrison said.
She said last year’s event brought more than 70 volunteers to help with inside and outside projects that included general maintenance to local homes.
Maureen Harrison said volunteers can chose their projects and they given the materials they need.
Then the volunteers are sent to do minor home repairs for local people who previously submitted applications.
Harrison the goal for the day is to help those in need including senior citizens, disabled members of the community and single, working women.
“ Often times, these individuals don’t have anyone to help them, or they are on a fixed income and need assistance in completing some necessary minor home repair work,” she said.
Meanwhile, volunteers are asked to meet Oct. 26 at the Boys & Girls Club at Chadick Park from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and are asked to donate at least two hours of service. Lunch will be provided.
