Book signing set this weekend to benefit correctional officers

McALESTER — A former Oklahoma State Penitentiary warden is ready to share his experiences behind the walls through a book-signing set in McAlester this weekend to benefit a foundation for correctional officers.

Dan Reynolds, who served as OSP warden from 1991 to 1994, will be at Harbor Mountain Coffee House, at the corner of Third Street and Wyandotte Avenue, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.

Reynolds will be signing copies of his two prison-related books: “On the Other Side of the Bars” and “Caged Wisdom: Learning to See Through the Bars.”

In “On the Other Side of the Bars, Lessons Learned as a Prison Warden/Administrator,” Reynolds writes about his experience as a warden at OSP, as well as his time spent as a case manager working with prison inmates, as a deputy warden and at other posts with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. It includes his first-experience at OSP — as a 16-year-old who drove up to the prison walls after hearing about the outbreak of the 1973 riot at the maximum-security prison in McAlester.

“On the Other Side of the Bars” is “a good book for criminal justice students, those interested in getting into corrections as a career, and those who are already in corrections,” Reynolds said.

Speaking of his other book, “Caged Wisdom: Learning to See Through the Bars,” Reynolds said “That’s what God wants inmates to know; if Jesus was sitting in a cell with an inmate, what would Jesus tell that inmate?”

Reynolds said he’s accepting $20 donations for each book, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation.
