McALESTER — District 2 Pittsburg County Commissioner Kevin Smith said at least nine people have expressed interest in running for the open Dist. 3 commissioner’s seat.

The Pittsburg County commissioners met on Monday for a regular meeting at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The Dist. 3 seat became open after the sudden death of Ronnie Young.

At a previous meeting Smith said according to state law, the remaining commissioners had to act quickly to fill the position Young held as District 3 commissioner.

During Monday’s meeting Smith said the Pittsburg County Commissioners received the confirmation from Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin that a special election to fill the seat will be held.

He said the filing period for those interested in running will be Sept. 9,10,11.

“We have had quite a bit of interest,” Smith said.

Also during the meeting Sandra Heffley director of the Pittsburg County Animal Shelter asked the commissioners to consider allowing her to close the shelter 15-minutes early everyday to help the staff get out in time.

Heffley said people have been coming to look at the dogs just before closing, causing the employees to have to stay late.

Smith said he would “kick around” the idea and let her know.

Also attending Monday’s meeting was District 1 Commissioner Gene Rogers.

Pittsburg County commissioners meet Mondays at 9 a.m. in the commissioner’s conference room at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

The meetings are open to the public.
