McALESTER —

Healthy McAlester-area residents age 16 and older are encouraged by Oklahoma Blood Institute to donate blood Aug. 28 and Aug. 30, organizers said.

Donations take about an hour and can be made every 56 days.

OBI says they provide every drop of blood needed by patients in 144 state medical facilities.

Donate blood at the following locations.

Aug. 28 — From 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Healthback Home Health, 721 South George Nigh Expwy, Suite 3 McAlester, 405- 842-1700.

Aug. 30 — From 1:30 to 6 p.m. at the Walmart Super Center, 32 S. George Nigh Expy. McAlester, 918- 423-8585.

Along with free health screenings and Donor Rewards points to redeem at OBI’s online store, each donor will also receive a free T-shirt.

“With even the most common blood types, we routinely operate with only a three-day supply,” said John Armitage, M.D., Oklahoma Blood Institute president and chief executive.

“We wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that with vaccines, sutures or for other medical needs. And we shouldn’t with blood. That’s why regular donation by those who can is so important.”

Appointments are not required but can be made by calling 877-340-8777 or visiting www.obi.org.

16 year olds must weigh at least 125 and provide signed parental permission; 17 year olds must weigh at least 125 pounds; Those age 18 and over must weigh at least 110 pounds.
