Myers plans to continue as emergency management director, until he takes oath as new commissioner

McALESTER — McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management Director Trent Myers plans to remain on duty at his post through Monday morning.

That’s when he’s slated to be sworn in as the new District 3 Pittsburg County commissioner.

Election results in the District 3 election became official at 5 p.m. Friday when the deadline to contest the election expired.

Myers, a Democrat, is now the official winner. He garnered 484 votes in last Tuesday’s election, compared to 384 for Republican candidate Miles Cathey — a difference of 100 votes. They were vying for the right to fill the post left vacant by the death of previous District 3 Commissioner Ronnie Young.

Asked earlier if he intended to resign from the emergency management post following his  election victory, Myers said he intends to continue serving as emergency management director until he takes the oath of office as the new commissioner.

“I’ll be the emergency management director until Monday morning,” Myers said.

He expects to take the oath at the Pittsburg County commission meeting set for 9 a.m. Monday at the Pittsburg County Courthouse.

Myers said he figures after he takes the oath, he will no longer be the emergency management director because he couldn’t hold two positions at the same time.

“I assume once I’m sworn in, it will become vacant,” he said.

Myers said he’s served as the emergency management director for Pittsburg County for approximately nine years.

Current Assistant Emergency Management Director Lois Lupardus has served in her post almost as long, he said.

“She’s been there about a month less than I have,” Myers said.

Although he had  no official word on it, Myers said he figures Lupardus might serve as interim director until a new one is appointed. He also said he will be willing to help out in the event of an emergency or if he’s needed in some other capacity before a new emergency management director is named.

“If something really big comes up, I will step over there and assist them” Myers said. “I just won’t get paid for it.”

Myers said that’s something he’s willing to do.

“I won’t let what I’ve worked for all these years go down in flames,” he said.

One more thing.

Since Pittsburg County commissioners appoint the director of the emergency management post, Myers could find himself in the unique position of appointing his own successor, once he takes office as the new District 3 commissioner.
