Voting days changed

McALESTER — A new state law has changed the early in-person absentee ballot voting days for the upcoming Tuesday General Election in Pittsburg County’s District 3 and in the Crowder School District.

Early in-person voting is now set for Thursday and Friday, said Pittsburg County Election  board Secretary Cathy Thornton.

Early voting is set from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the Pittsburg County Election Board office at 109 E. Carl Albert Parkway, Room 101. Early voting is in advance of Tuesday’s General Election, when polling places are set to be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

A new state law went into effect on Nov. 1 setting the early voting days, Thornton said.

“We won’t have early voting on Monday,” Thornton said, noting one of the effects of the new voting day. Since this is a local race, there will also be no early in-person absentee ballot voting Saturday.

Thornton said there has been some confusion because some calendars have listed Nov. 5 as a federal election day. Thornton said she doesn’t know the source of the calendars, but the information on them has nothing to do with any elections in Pittsburg County.

“It’s caused some confusion here,” Thornton said, adding that several calls have come into the election board office as a result of the calendars.

“One lady called and told me she drove all the way to Bugtussle on Tuesday and the precinct was closed,” Thornton said.

She said she told the lady the election is Nov. 12.

In the District 3 election, Democratic Candidate Trent Myers and Republican candidate Miles Cathey are in a race to determine the new District 3 Pittsburg County commissioner.

Cathey won the two-man Republican race during the Oct. 8 Primary Election, while Myers came out on too in a seven candidate field on the Democratic side.

Also on the ballot Tuesday is a $560,000 school bond election in the Crowder School District.

In Tuesday’s General Election, District 3 voters will be able to cross party lines for the first time in the race for county commissioner.
