Councilman says recycle center "horribly trashy"

McALESTER — “It’s horribly trashy.”

That’s how one city council member described the McAlester Recycling Center on Tuesday at the McAlester City Council meeting.

The comment was made during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the McAlester City Council in the council chambers at City Hall.

Ward 6 City Councilor Sam Mason described the recycling center at South Main Street and Choctaw Avenue as not only “horribly trashy” but also as “very very trashy.”

The McAlester Recycling center has been opened since 2010. It’s owned by the city and managed by the Kibios Community Action Foundation, according to City Manager Pete Stasiak. He said city pays Kibois $1800 a month to manage the center.

During the meeting, Mason said, “I invite anyone to take a drive by the center and take a look.”

“We can’t have people drive by that center and look at that mess, somebody has to get a handle on it,” Mason said.

Ward 3 Councilor Travis Reed told Mason that the center  is “better now than it was.”

“I drove by today and it’s a mess,” Mason said.

Meanwhile on Thursday Stasiak saud because of the growing popularity of the recycling center  the demands outgrown the capacity of Kibois and that the city will be working on a solution that will keep the recycling center clean.
